DE LA SOUL
De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the '90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap, however through Blacksmith’s managements direction, the group won a Grammy in 2006 for their collaboration with Gorillaz.
Known for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop sub-genres, the group's third studio release saw the group evolve a new sound as they continued to grow stylistically and musically through Blacksmith’s direction.
By way of strategic partnerships and access, they were influential in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the second longest standing Native Tongues group, after the Jungle Brothers.
In early 2015, Blacksmith was integral in helping the group develop their artistic projects by bringing their ideas to life via modernizing their marketing strategy and approach. Blacksmith aided in the release a Kickstarter-funded upcoming 9th studio album and the Anonymous Nobody in September 2015; released on August 26, 2016. The album features guest appearances from artists such as Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, David Byrne and 2 Chainz. The group is gearing up for their anniversary tour.
De La Soul is back. The legendary hip-hop trio returns with their first new album in nearly a decade — Cabin in the Sky (released November 2025). It’s their first project since the loss of Trugoy the Dove, and it’s packed with both emotion and energy. Featuring production from Pete Rock and DJ Premier, plus guest spots from Nas, Killer Mike, and Black Thought, the album blends classic De La soulfulness with a fresh, modern edge. More than a comeback, this record is a celebration — honoring their legacy.
